THE APPEARANCE
A tall man and of quite a wiry build - Samwell often disappoints at first. Whereas his reputation mandates a burly man with a beard long as Goldilocks' hair, he is in fact quite the opposite. He has short brown hair that he keeps cut in the typical military style - not wanting to compromise his vision only to please the eye of the beholder. Samwell is rarely found without a sword by his side, believing it undignified for a knight not to be able to serve at the queen's whim. He often dons the regular uniform as worn by his fellow servicemen, but is known to change into something more appropriate whenever the occasion, or his superiors call for it.
THE PERSONALITY
Principled and honorable - Sir Samwell Auvrey is a man of dignity and chivalry. Instead of being excessively ambitious he is rather dutiful - preferring to serve the realm and its reigning monarch instead of pursuing his own interests and purposes as a lord or courtier. To Samwell - knighthood is the very epitome of sacred and he will hold those that break the code in utter contempt. He values loyalty and courage in his fellows and will often seek to surround himself with knights who exhibit such noble traits. A ferocious warrior whenever he joins his comrades on the battlefield, the general in him believes that a true leader does so from the front - thus one may often find him there, on the frontlines. Samwell is a stringent often stubborn commander and will push his men to the very edge if he has to in order to win the day. He plays fair and expects fair play in return, despite knowing that honorable opponents are in short supply these days. While brutal and uncompromising in the field, he stands out for his kind manners and candid counsel amongst his peers in Elrond.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Faeryn
BIRTH KINGDOM: Valterra
The son of high nobility, there was never much question on the matter of what Samwell's purpose in life would be. His father, Lord Edmund, wanted him to pursue the life he himself had pursued - the life of a courtier, a nobleman in service to oneself. In a cruel twist of fate - Samwell abhorred the lives of high nobility and found them to be dull in earnest. As a child he could never sit still his lessons and instead preferred to play soldier with his close friends. He played chess during his early teens and read up on great generals of the past. In time, Edmund came to realize his expectations needed to be changed drastically and send him off to the drill yard for training. His sister was then educated for the post his father held. A pursuit she proved more proficient in then he ever had.
Samwell proved more diligent a student whenever it involved swords and shields, and quickly excelled. Aged sixteen he enlisted in the Valterran army and narrowly avoided Edmund's attempts to arrange a marriage for him. He was posted on the kingdom's border with Errigal for several years, but preferring to allow others the glory, did not advance in rank. To serve was his motto, and he held the career-mongering displayed by those that he had been posted with in utter contempt. They were defending a kingdom, not their egos. Yet his peers seemed to believe otherwise. In a single year did he surpass his comrades and proved his valor in combat against bandits from Valterra's poverty stricken neighbor. He was put in charge of a garrison near Elrond at the humble age of twenty three, yet for this victory he was defeated as Edmund took notice of his son's advancement.
He was betrothed to a noblewoman, Natasha, from the capital and they were married several months after. Despite harboring resentment toward his father, he harbored none toward his wife and the couple gradually came to enjoy the situation they had been forced into. Natasha bore him a son and subsequently three daughters. For several years they were a happy family. Overjoyed when his wife fell pregnant again, the general never expected complications and was greatly shocked when they did arise. Grief struck at the death of his beloved wife, Samwell never remarried in the years that followed and instead acted as the overprotective father as he molded them into proper citizens.
Aged forty four, he was named an advisor to King Henry and the two got along just fine. There was never a single disagreement between the two and Samwell came to greatly respect the man that occupied the kingdom's highest office. Errigal's attempt at an invasion proved laughable at first, and the general led the vanguard with pride. Yet soon they found that their neighbors had organized themselves in a manner one could only respect. King Siegfried, aided by an unknown figure turned the tide and soon they found themselves running for shelter. It was a massacre in earnest and soon Samwell found himself coordinating retreats instead of charges. Yet the rabid king of Errigal had never been one of the brainy sorts. Soon he was lured into the field and a final battle between the two warring parties commenced as the two kings fought.
In the end it was King Siegfried who struck the killing blow. Taking command of the Valterran army, Samwell then ordered the charge and the Errigallians were routed as the mad king seemed to have had his fill. To this day Samwell harbors a deep hatred for their neighbor, but cautions against waging another war in earnest.
