THE APPEARANCE
A clear cut aristocrat, Alexander looks his part and one could thus pick him out of a crowd of his impoverished countrymen with relative ease. He is tall, as befitting of a monarch, standing at a good six feet two inches and thoroughly enjoys towering over others. His brown hair is kept short as per military tradition and matches the king's peaceful brown eyes. Alexander would not dare hide his house's wealth and strives to show it off as much as he possibly can without seeming pretentious; a sign of Targaryn's wealth to be picked up on and relayed home by foreign dignitaries. Usually he is dressed in his uniform, eschewing the crown, the jewelry and the clothing that would allow others to liken him to his even-more-pompous predecessors. Lastly, a sword is always at his side and Alexander regularly practices swordplay in an attempt to stay ahead of possible competitors.
THE PERSONALITY
Soft spoken and mild mannered; Alexander differs from his father and brother in many a way. He is well read and rather intelligent; preferring to know a little of everything. With the bulk of his knowledge being focused on naval warfare, Alexander seemingly favors the opinions of others and will often defer to his remaining relatives and experts for advice. In the end, however, he will often follow the opinions of those closest to him. Alexander is very much cursed with the very same arrogant and stubborn nature that has defined his house and dynasty for generations. The king can be charming and affectionate toward those he loves; however, one would have to look past the cruelty, greed and rampant militarism that have so far defined his rule in order to even appreciate it. Alexander is the firmest of believers in creating a strong state and monarchy and is thus given to the pursuit of symbolism and mysticism; in this he has found willing allies in the Drakan Church as well as his kingdom's nobility and military leadership.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Faeryn
BIRTH KINGDOM: Targaryn
A scion of one of Faeryn's oldest royal houses, Alexander was born to the elderly King Godfrey VI of House Desmares and his third wife, the baroness Chantal of House Fenmyr. The rule of his father had been a long one and many insiders knew that he had been subject to a rare illness for several years. By the time King Godfrey had past, so had his eldest brother; Friedrich had died in waiting at the humble age of fifty four. It was the first of two leadership crises that would come to pass during Alexander's lifetime. Friedrich's son, the twenty six year old Erwyn, believed to be the throne's rightful claimant while the forty six year old Johann professed his own plans for taking the kingdom's vacant throne. Within days the capital was divided between the two camps, with the army rooting for Prince Johann and the people secretly hoping for Prince Erwyn.
Following several brief standoffs within the walls of the capital, the crisis was resolved with the death of Prince Erwyn. So it came to pass that Johann took the throne and continued the policies of his father. The army saw an ever higher number of new recruits, agriculture was collectivized and the Crown took sole possession of the kingdom's mineral resources. The militaristic policies of his predecessor once invited a scholar to quip that, "Targaryn was not a kingdom with an army, but an army with a kingdom".
Lacking a father, Alexander was raised by his brother and was commonly referred to as his heir. Situations change quickly, however; and Johann, now at the age of fifty six, soon received a son of his own. A ten year old Alexander was discarded and left to the whimsical parenting of his mother; who had been continuously mourning his father's death a decade earlier. At the age of sixteen, and with high hopes that he would be able to get away from his family, a desperate Alexander joined the Targarynian navy and, with the support of his brother, the king, quickly rose through the ranks. The prince would have his own ship by the time he was nineteen and he would command an entire fleet by the time he had reached the age of twenty one. What he would lack in the wisdoms that came with age, Alexander compensated by the use of his youthful brilliance. His tactics were supplemented by a special kind of cunning and he quickly earned the moniker, "The Fox" for his conduct while out on sea.
The second crisis came soon after that. When the king began to doubt his own policies he began to reverse them; thus angering both the nobility and the military leadership. Uprisings swept the land as noblemen raised their banners and began a slow, lumbering march on the kingdom's capital. Hoping to find a loyal ally in his brother, Johann promoted Alexander to the navy's highest station. A grave mistake, for Alexander, having determined the imperialistic merit of his brother's policies, had ambitions of his own; under his directions the Targarynian fleet laid siege to and eventually landed in Eothain. From there on, supported by a militia several thousand strong, a combined force marched on Boromir where he ordered the city ransacked and any monuments constructed by his brother destroyed.
Finding his brother praying in an obscure chapel near the palace, the two dueled and through trickery and guile did Alexander emerge victorious. It was this act that would be the start of a new golden age or, at least, so he would have you believe it.
