THE APPEARANCE
Standing at five feet six inches, Madeliene is rather average in height, and certainly does not tower over many, unlike her husband. Her build is quite light, and is certainly not the strongest of women, though is far from the typical dainty flowers most noble women seem to be, having spent the majority of her life actually participating in physical activities. Her eyes are a rather pretty hazel color. Madeliene usually wears her light brown hair long, down to just below her shoulders, though she will often put her hair up if she is taking care of something she'd rather her hair not get in the way of.
When it comes to clothing, Madeliene can often be found in public wearing fancy dresses and the like, befitting her status as queen. However, when she's away from the public eye, Madeliene prefers to wear clothing that is much, much more comfortable and less restricting. That said, she spent the first half of her life wearing clothing that was poorly made and ill-fitting... the clothing she wears now, while unrestricted, is wealthy and tailored specifically for her. In addition, Madeliene can often be found wearing jewelry, as any self-respecting queen should. However, unlike most noblewomen, the most common accessory she wears is rather lacking in material value.. though it is priceless in Madeliene's eyes. This is a necklace bearing the symbol of the Nevarran faith, which she was given as a gift by her mentor Leanne, when she first started her training as a healer.
THE PERSONALITY
Compassionate, helpful, kind... these words have always been the perfect ones to describe Madeliene, from childhood to adulthood. Though she has become much more jaded over the years, having seen hundreds of people die while the corrupt turned the other way, she still believes in the inherent goodness of humanity as a whole, and she refuses to stop trying to make sure the world is a better place. Conveniently, Madeliene is currently in a perfect position to do so, ever since catching the eye of the king of Van'Ostgar, and has spent much of her time and used much of her influence to spread goodwill, especially towards the lower classes.
Though she is not connected to them by blood, Madeliene loves her stepchildren quite dearly, and considers them to be as good as hers. Unlike her husband, who is quite strict, Madeliene tends to be a bit more lenient when it comes to rules. This is for several reasons, but the most obvious of them is that she is, realistically, close enough in age to the two oldest that she could be their older sister, and she does not wish for them to come to resent her, something which has quickly become one of her greatest fears. As befitting someone who used to save lives, Madeliene prefers peace to war on any day, and is quick to support her husband's decisions when it comes to diplomacy. That said, she is no pacifist, and believes that sometimes, conflict is the only realistic way to solve a problem.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Mourinor
BIRTH KINGDOM: Van’Ostgar
Madeliene was born the second child of Tristan and Victoire Louvier, in a small, poor village in Van'Ostgar. As she was a member of a lower class family, Madeliene did not have too many opportunities growing up. For her first few years of childhood, it appeared as if Madeliene would be stuck in a dead end, helping her mother keep house until she was married off to some village boy, and then keeping house for him. Without any reason to see a possibility in doing anything else, she resigned herself to this, and simply took what joy out of life that she could, just like every other person in her village. Or at least, she did this until she was seven.
A few weeks after her seventh birthday, a small group of Nevarran priestesses came to their village, hoping to help the poor and teach those who otherwise could not afford schooling. For the majority of the village, their arrival was something which was exciting at first, but died down rather fast as time went on. Though the villagers appreciated the help the priestesses and their staff gave, the majority of them ignored the schooling opportunities, seeing it as a complete waste of time when one expected to live their lives out toiling away at the fields. For Madeliene's parents, however, this school was a chance at something better for their children. When Gauvain and Maddie were able to take breaks from their chores, they could be found in the classes of the priestesses, learning how to read and write, to do math, and other such things.
It was in this school that Madeliene discovered her love for the arts of healing. One of the priestesses, an older woman named Leanne, specialized in medical knowledge, and had taken to working with the village healer in treating the wounds and sicknesses of the villagers. Having noticed Madeliene was ahead of most of her class when it came to intellectual fields, Leanne offered to tutor the girl in her profession. Maddie accepted this offer, seeing the idea of being a healer to be quite interesting. Her parents were particularly happy with her decision, as healers tended to become respected members of their communities, and would often be able to go further in life with their skills.
Over the period of a few years, Maddie was tutored in Leanne's trade, learning how to cure sickness through the use of herbs, and how to heal wounds through the use of surgical tools. For awhile, Maddie was quite happy with her life, as she was able to help members of her village alongside Leanne, and bring in much needed money to her family. Even when confronted with fatal injuries, and deadly sicknesses, Maddie kept going strong, helped along by Leanne who told her that the souls of the dead were going to a much better place.
When Maddie was eighteen, news spread quickly throughout the kingdom that Queen Danielle had contracted some sort of sickness, and had died despite the attempts of the castle healers to save her. To Maddie, who's interactions with the rest of Van'Ostgar had been relatively few, this did not effect her much, as the King and Queen were only names to her. To much of the village, however, this was a great tragedy, and for quite some time, the community spent time in mourning for their lost queen. Throughout it all, Madeliene kept working with Leanne.
A year later, Madeliene got her first taste of the horrors of war. Though she was familiar with death by then, having seen many patients die of injuries, or sickness, or old age, nothing that she had seen could compare to the scenes played before her one day when Van'Ostgar soldiers came to their village following a battle with enemy forces. The Nevarran priestesses were brought in to provide medical attention alongside the doctors of the army, and with them, Madeliene came. She saw to hundreds of men and women, assisting with the treating of wounds. However, for every man she saved, three more men died, their wounds to grievous to heal. To see so many suffering was almost too much to bear, and Madeliene spent much of her time not assisting in the camps sobbing.
One day, Leanne discovered Madeliene praying to Zaahra in the Nevarran church, asking for the goddess to help her. Leanne comforted the girl, and explained that war was something that not even gods could stop, and that, yes, it was a horrible thing indeed. But she also told Madeliene that as a healer, Madeliene could help make the world a better place, by helping save those who fought to keep their people free. By the end of the conversation, Madeliene knew that would need to push forward. While conflict could not be stopped, she could stop the suffering such conflicts caused.
After a few weeks of working to take care of the wounded and dying soldiers, word was given that the army would be moving on. Before they left, however, the recruitment officers in the force asked for recruits to assist in coming battles. Many young men of the village opted to join the soldiers, as it was seen as a chance to improve their lot in life. After all, a soldier made much more than a mere peasant farmer... and held much more prestige as well. One of the men to join the soldiers was Madeliene's older brother Gauvain, who, due to being given schooling by the Nevarran priests, was given a commission as an officer of the militia. Meanwhile, Madeliene was given an offer to join the army not as a soldier, but as one of the healers who accompanied them. Though she at first was unsure, the money she was offered, as well as a desire to make sure her older brother stayed safe, made her mind up for her. With both of her parents and Leanne giving her their blessing, Maddie joined her brother and left with the soldiers.
Over the course of two years, Maddie served as part of the army medical staff, taking care of wounded soldiers following the various skirmishes they got involved in. Gauvain, who had quickly managed to rise through the ranks from his original commission as a militia captain to an officer of the regular army, managed to pull enough strings to have Maddie attached to whatever force his units were attached to, ensuring the two of them were kept together throughout their career. For two years, Gauvain fought the battles, while Maddie patched the soldiers up afterward.
Following the end of her second year, however, Madeliene decided that it was time for her to return home, to spend some time with her parents. Resigning from her post, Maddie made her way back home, where she was greeted by her both her parents, and Leanne, who by now had become the head of the church in the village. Taking up the post of village healer, vacated by the previous one a few months prior, Madeliene once again served her home village as its healer. Over time, it became apparent that she had made a bit of a name for herself during her time attached to the Van'Ostgar army, without even knowing herself. The wounded and the sick came from neighboring villages to be put under the care of Madeliene and her growing group of healers, and with every person she cared for, her name was spread just a little farther.
After a year of working in the village, when Madeliene was twenty one years old, news came from the capitol of a horrible incident involving the king's young daughter, Princess Felicia. An arcanist, apparently an escapee of one of Mourinor's Arcane Cities, had attacked the girl while she played outside the city walls, and had been wounded greatly. Apparently, someone in the king's inner circle had caught word of Madeliene's skill at healing, and shortly after hearing of the attack, Madeliene was summoned to the capitol to try to assist where the court physicians could not.
Leaving the village in the care of Leanne, Madeliene traveled to the capitol under the guard of several knights, where she immediately was tasked with trying to save the young princess from death. Here, she began working, trying various techniques to heal the young girl's injuries. For awhile, it seemed as if even she would be unable to save Felicia, but after awhile, Madeliene eventually made a breakthrough with her treatment, and was able to get Felicia to the point where survival was almost guaranteed. Still, Madeliene informed the King that it would take quite a bit of time before his daughter was in the clear. Almost on the spot, King Picard hired her to be Felicia's personal nurse, something which Madeliene accepted almost as quickly. After all, it wasn't every day one got invited by the King of their kingdom to look after a princess... plus, Madeliene wanted to make sure Felicia stayed safe. After all, complications could crop up, and if she wasn't there, who was going to help the girl?
Over the course of a year, Madeliene stayed by Felicia's side, making sure that she took her medicine regularly, and treating her when her injuries worked up. During this time, she came to care a great deal about the princess, and indeed became quite close to the girl. At the same time, thanks to her close proximity to the king, Madeliene became quite close to him as well.. or as close as one could get to a king while they were still a peasant. Over time, Madeliene began to gradually fall for the man, much to her displeasure. After all, no matter how close she was to his family, she was still simply just his servant. Such feelings would just get in the way of what she needed to do, which was watch over the young princess.
When Ambrose told her he had fallen in love with her, and asked her to marry him, Madeliene's heart almost stopped, for it was so unexpected. Having grown to love the man, as well as his family, during her time spent as Felicia's nurse, she was more than happy to accept. When her parents received the news, they were, obviously, quite stunned. Their little peasant Madeliene had gone from a poor village girl, to the queen of the entire kingdom. It was hard not to be surprised. Needless to say, they were proud of how far their daughter had come. Likewise, upon hearing the news, Leanne was overcome with pride, seeing the girl she had taught to be a healer having gotten so far.
Since her marriage to the king, Madeliene has ruled by Ambrose's side as Queen, and has used the influence of her new position to assist where she can within the kingdom. Despite having been elevated to a position of power within the kingdom, Madeliene has surrounded herself with those who were loyal to her even before that, most notably her brother and several of his fellow soldiers, who she had assigned to her personal guard. That said, she is more than willing to associate with the nobility... or at least the nobility who tolerate her low-born origin.
