THE APPEARANCE
Rather tall for a dwarf, Duran has a tendency to stand well above most other dwarves, though he is, like any other dwarf, still towered over by humans and elves. His frame is quite imposing, his body being incredibly muscular and obviously suited for brute strength. His body is covered in scars sustained through a life of warfare, his forearms in particular bearing several glaringly obvious marks. Like any respectable dwarf, Duran maintains a glorious beard. While the top of Duran's head is completely bald, it is covered with tattoos of dwarven runes. Both his beard and the hair he allows himself to grow are black, with small streaks of gray beginning to show.
In terms of clothing, Duran has yet to grow accustomed to more regal clothing. As a result, most of the clothing he wears has a tendency to be less than showy, though all of his casual clothing is of exceedingly high quality, simply due to his position. The clothing he prefers to adorn himself with, however, are furs and leathers from great beasts, such as wolves, bears, or larger creatures. Not only do these items keep him warm during Forval's numbing winters, but they also serve as decent protective gear, and add to his intimidation factor. For armor, Duran wears an assortment of types, depending on the circumstances. Usually, he can be found wearing a combination of chainmail and brigandine armor beneath his fur and leathers, though when circumstances call for it, he will done a suit of heavy dwarven-forged plate armor.
THE PERSONALITY
Fiery, brash, aggressive, dangerous. All of these things can easily be applied to Duran Aeducan, King of the Dwarves. Being a warrior at his core, it is only fitting that his attitude reflect this. As a result, many find his ability to negotiate to be a bit lacking of the refinement of more diplomatic kings, and indeed, they'd be right. Duran is more at home bashing an enemy to a pulp with his mighty warhammer than he is trying to turn that enemy into an ally. Unfortunately, he can't run a kingdom that way. As a result, he has learned to give a passable performance within the court, as any king should.
On a personal level, Duran is a rather enjoyable man, so long as you give him the proper level of respect a man of his station deserves. He is, like many dwarves, partial to merrymaking with those whom he considers friends. It has been observed that, behind the walls of steel he surrounds himself with for the better of his people, he is in truth a kind-hearted man. Unlike many kings, who consider their subjects to be their servants, Duran considers himself to be a servant of the people, ensuring that they are protected from all who would harm them. He cares not for power over the weak, and would much rather stand at their side than above them. This attitude, as well as his self-sacrificing nature when it comes to the dwarven race as a whole, has earned him the respect and adoration of many of the dwarves who live under his rule.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Mourinor
BIRTH KINGDOM: Forval
Duran was born the second son of then-King of Forval, Endrin Aeducan. As the second born son, Duran was destined by birth to enter the service of the kingdom as an officer of the military, while his older brother would inherit the crown. Unlike many noble sons throughout history, Duran was quite content with this arrangement, even as a young lad. From the time he was old enough to pick up an axe, Duran had found himself to be naturally gifted in the art of combat, and so found the idea of a career in it to be extremely favorable. His brother could take the crown, it mattered not to him.
The day following his 30th birthday, Duran was given his first command. Alongside his father, his older brother, uncle and their respective troops, Duran ventured forth from the dwarven capital in order to launch an attack on a large force of bandits who had been harassing nearby cities. While usually not a task suited for the king himself to be a part of, Duran's father wished to be present to see his son's first mission. Unfortunately for everyone, this decision proved to be a dangerous one for the king of the dwarves.
While hunting the tunnels beneath one of the cities for the bandits, the war band was ambushed. Bandits, much more numerous than scouts had suggested, began attacking the noble forces from the rear. At first, Duran, his family, and their soldiers were able to hold off the enemies, but as time went on, more and more of the dwarf soldiers fell. Realizing that they would be overwhelmed simply by numbers if they were to stay in the tunnels, Duran's father gave the command to push through the attacking forces, and make for the exit of the tunnels. As he made this command, however, treachery struck. From behind, Duran's uncle cut the king down before he could defend himself. At that very moment, his uncle's forces attacked the exposed rear of the dwarven formation, assisting the bandits in their assault.
Caught between their former allies and the bandits, with seemingly no chance of survival, Duran and his brother made their stand with their forces. Though they were able to cut down dozens of enemy attackers, the battle began to take an extremely clear toll on the royal brother's men. Eventually, Duran watched his brother fall beneath the blade of his uncle, who had managed to fight his way through Aedan's bodyguard to get to him. Duran, furious at the betrayal of his uncle and the slaying of both his brother and father, took up his father's ancestral hammer and led his retinue to his uncle. Backed by his anger, and the considerable skill of his men, Duran managed to slay his uncle, smashing the traitor to the ground with his hammer blows.
This proved to be a turning point in the battle. With their leader dead, Duran's uncle's men began to falter, and began to lay down their weapons in droves.. The bandits, with their allies falling, and their numbers failing, began to retreat, leaving the few fighting traitors to die. When the fighting finally stopped, most of the traitors were dead or captured, while the majority of the surviving loyalists were wounded to some extent. Duran, now in command of all the loyalists by default, ordered them to gather the dead and their captives, and leave the tunnels, to make for the capital, where they could deliver the horrible news.
Upon returning to the capital city, Duran's news was greeted with shock. Though it had long been noticed that King Endrin's brother had wished to have the throne, not one person had thought he would allow his greed to take a hold of him in such a way. For a week, the capital city was a place of mourning, all joyous occasions canceled in respect for the fallen king and his eldest son. At the end of this week of mourning, it became time for something extremely important: the crowning of the new king.
Having never wished for the throne, and having always felt more comfortable fighting rather than leading, Duran attempted to protest. His mother, however, would have none of it, and Duran held the favor of both the nobility and the commoners due to his reported bravery during his uncle's betrayal. As a result, it was insisted that Duran would claim the crown, and become the new king. With little choice in the matter, Duran relented, and during a lavish ceremony, Duran was crowned King of Forval.
For the past twenty years, Duran has ruled his kingdom, and has proved himself to be a better leader than he had ever imagined. Though his position forces him to spend much of his time within the capital city, running the affairs of his kingdom, Duran retains his warrior's heart, and will take any chance he can to lead his armies from the front, something which has earned him further respect from the common folk. A king who is willing to put his life on the line for the good of his people is a good king indeed, they say.
And in a world where other kingdoms pose a threat to dwarven freedom, it may be that a warrior king is the only king that can keep them free.
