THE APPEARANCE
Mizuki stands at the rather short height of five feet three inches, and weighs in at just over a hundred pounds. As a result, not many people would describe her as being quite intimidating in appearance. Although she is naturally a brunette, Mizuki has a preference for dying her hair blonde, in imitation of her adoptive parents. She keeps her hair cut short in a boyish fashion, as she long ago realized that long hair, no matter how 'traditional' it was, was a pain to deal with. Mizuki's eyes are a dark brown, and are considered quite striking, as her rather pale skin seems to make them incredibly noticeable.
When it comes to her attire, Mizuki prefers to wear clothing that is both pleasing to the eye and comfortable. She dislikes many of the trends within the noble circles when it comes to clothing, and ignores most of them. Occasionally, however, a particular trend will catch her eye, and she will incorporate something similar into her fashion. She tends to favor darker colors in her fabrics, such as red, grey, or black. That said, occasionally Mizuki will find herself liking a more vibrantly colored piece, and will wear something of that sort without question.
THE PERSONALITY
Mizuki is, at first glance, a charming individual. She says all the right things to all the right people, and is fully capable of turning even some of the most brutal opponents to her side. Unfortunately for nearly everyone, this is where her 'kindness' seems to get blurry. At her core, there are only two things Mizuki cares about; family and victory. Making friends is something she mostly does because it allows her to gather allies, and allies mean more power. Behind close doors, Mizuki can be kind of a jerkass. Though not personally narcissistic, Mizuki sees her family as being superior in most regards to her rivals, which is one of the reasons she has decided to block her rival's movements... simply because she can.
This isn't to say she is a mean person. Its just that she is simply more centered on furthering House Valliere's goals than anything else. Indeed, were she not leading the House, chances are she would be more like her old self; kind-hearted and generous. Its just that upon her ascension to leader has forced her to become much more hardened and willing to resort to tactics frowned upon by others to survive. She's not above using all of the tools at her disposal for furthering her family's goals now... any of them. In the end, no matter how many feet she steps on on her way to the top, if the Valliere's retain their strength, than it was worth it.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Faeryn
BIRTH KINGDOM: Eldwyn
Mizuki's story begins with her parents, the Lord and Lady Tokiwa, exiles from the Nishata Confederacy across the ocean. Upon their exile to Eldwyn, the Tokiwa's had sworn their fealty to House Valliere, a Eldwynian noble house who's head had befriended Lord Tokiwa years before. Establishing themselves as a vassal family controlling a portion of the Valliere trading company, the Tokiwa's were set to grow in power within the kingdom. For a period of ten years, the Tokiwas managed their sector of the trade agreements, while building up their own power. Unfortunately for them, this would prove to be quite the opposite of permanent.
A year after Mizuki was born, tragedy struck the Tokiwa family. A rival noble house, jealous of the Valliere's growing power, began a campaign of espionage against their supporting houses, in an attempt to damage their profits. By chance, one of the supporting houses targeted were the Tokiwas. The rival family paid privateers to harass the shipping lanes used by the Tokiwas. Unfortunately, one of the vessels sunk by the privateers was carrying both the Lord and Lady Tokiwa, on their way to supervise the opening of a new sector of the Valliere's organization. Mizuki, back in her family's home keep, was left the heir to her family's money and operations at only a year old.
The head of House Valliere, unwilling to see his vassal house's affairs be destroyed, immediately seized direct control of the Tokiwa's operations. In addition, Lord Valliere and his wife adopted Mizuki into their family, taking her as their daughter. This served several purposes. First and foremost, bringing Mizuki into the family allowed the Valliere's to lay a legitimate claim to the money the Tokiwa's acquired during their operations. Almost as important, the Lord Valliere had ran into... difficulties... in producing a heir. Seeing an opportunity to at least acquire a daughter that he could use to marry off to another noble family in order to forge an advantageous alliance, the Lord made his move.
Though she was adopted, Mizuki's childhood was rather typical for Eldwynian noble children. From the moment she was able to talk, the girl was taught by the Valliere's many tutors. Mizuki enjoyed her lessons thoroughly, finding them to be quite interesting to say the least. Perhaps her favorite thing to learn was the art of business. Though she was not expected to take over the Valliere trading network, it was still imperative that she learn how to manage it efficiently in the event that she was needed to assist any husband she might marry. Often placed in hypothetical scenarios by her tutors and asked to get negotiate an advantageous agreement, Mizuki succeeded at every turn, impressing her teachers greatly.
When Mizuki was eighteen, her father decided that it would be best to begin searching for possible suitors to marry her off to. Though she was not particularly happy with the idea of marrying someone she did not know, Mizuki went along with her father's idea, figuring that even in the worst case scenario, marriage might not be bad. Perhaps, even, she might be married to someone who she grew to love. And either way, it wasn't as if she had much choice in the matter to begin with. So why bother resisting? To both the surprise of Mizuki and her father, however, the suitors who lined up were, well, quite numerous. Having grown in power over the years to rival any of the other noble houses, the Valliere's were seen as a prime target to marry into.
Unfortunately for Mizuki's father, these negotiations were halted before they could truly begin. A few weeks after finishing a business deal with a supplier of a rival family, House Molyneux, tragedy struck the Valliere family. After enjoying an evening meal with a pair of trade partners, the Lord and Lady Valliere suddenly became violently ill. The house physicians, completely baffled, attempted to figure out what exactly had caused their sudden pain. Before they could narrow it down to a specific cause, however, both the Lord and Lady were dead, leaving Mizuki the heir to a noble house yet again.
When Mizuki was informed of her adoptive parents' passing, she was devastated. Soon after, when the physicians discovered the cause of death had been by poison, she was furious. The Lord and Lady Valliere had been her second set of parents to fall thanks to the political struggles between rival noble houses. The only difference was that this time, Mizuki was old enough to take charge. Though there were those within the House who protested her elevation, citing the fact that she was not Valliere by blood, this protest was quieted quickly when they realized that Mizuki, if nothing else, possessed a mind suited for negotiations. Successfully managing to increase profits in several troublesome sectors, mere months after the death of her parents, Mizuki showed that even though she was not Valliere by blood... she was most certainly one in spirit.
Now, seven years after the deaths of her adoptive parents, Mizuki has begun to set her sights on improving her house's standing even further. With the current situation in the seven kingdoms worsening, she has decided that now is as good a time as ever to set her plans into motion.
