THE APPEARANCE
Katherine is a rather short girl, standing at 5'3", and is light as a feather. Her hair is the same color as her eyes, a dark chocolate brown. Katherine is often described as adorable, or cute, though her appearance is marred by several scars. As a result, Katherine rarely wears revealing clothing, despite her trade as a performer, as she is quite self conscious when it comes to her scaring. The most obvious of these scars is a trio of large claw marks across her stomach, from where she was attacked by a wild dog. She has a scar across her right cheek from where she was backhanded by a man wearing a signet ring, though she covers this with makeup whenever possible.
As mentioned above, Katherine dislikes wearing revealing clothing due to her scars. She has a tendency to layer her clothing, especially in cold weather. Katherine usually wears simple rugged clothing while on the road, and utilizes cloaks extensively. When performing, she wears clothing that is both tight-fitting and easy to move in, to enhance her appearance. This clothing is often more detailed. Two things which she always wears, regardless of outfit, is a scarf and a silver necklace. When traveling, her scarf is usually black, or olive green, while her performing scarf tends to be whatever color that matches her outfits.
THE PERSONALITY
Katherine is a rather quiet individual, preferring to keep her thoughts to herself. She has a tendency to fade to the background in groups, to the point that others will often forget she is even there. This serves her well, as it allows her to gather information that would otherwise not be said in earshot. Katherine dislikes being the center of attention, unless she is performing for money, in which case her dislike of being watched is overpowered by her need for currency. She is an extremely selfless person, and finds it difficult to not assist those who she sees are in need. This desire to help others can often come back to bite her, such as when she gives what little she has away to help another.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Faeryn
BIRTH KINGDOM: Faylinn
Katherine was born the third child of Malcom and Leandra Hawke, in the village of Lothering. From the time she could walk and speak, Katherine found herself assisting her parents with tasks both around the house and the Castle which looked over the village. Her mother and sister were servants of the Cousland family, the lords of the village, and as such, Katherine was destined to become one as well. Though at first she disliked the work she was forced to do, over time Katherine came to enjoy herself. The Cousland family was just and honorable, and treated their servants with respect.
Growing up, Katherine looked up to her father and her older brother. Both of them were officers within the Cousland family's guard forces, and were widely considered to be the best within the ranks. To Katherine, both of them lived exciting lives, filled with adventure. Setting her sights on becoming a soldier like her brother and father, Katherine would often beg them to teach her how to fight in between her time spent working at the Castle. Though her father disliked the idea of his little angel learning to fight, and her chances of joining the predominantly male guard forces slim, Katherine's brother would often spend his off time teaching his sister how to shoot with a bow, and how to use knives.
When Katherine was twelve, during a routine shopping trip in the village market for her mother, she came across a bard who was playing a lute on a street corner. As there was nobody she knew that played an instrument save for the musicians retained by the Couslands, and was unable to speak to them, the bard's performance enthralled her. She found herself talking to the bard for a time, who was rather pleased to have come across a girl interested in his art as much as she was. Eventually, the conversation turned from a young girl excited about something new, to a young girl asking if there was any way that she could be taught to play as he did. As the bard was staying in town for quite some time, he agreed to teach her if she wished.
During the month and a half that the bard stayed within Lothering, Katherine squeezed in as much time spent learning from him as she could between working in the castle and being trained by her brother. When the bard finally was moved on to the next village, he left Katherine with a lute of her own, and encouraged her to keep it up, telling her that she could go far if she chose to continue in music. The girl took this advice to heart, and began focusing more and more on increasing her abilities with the instrument.
For the next several years, life for Katherine was fairly normal. She spent her time split between working at the castle as a servant, helping her mother with the house, and eventually, performing in the marketplace for extra money. This all changed roughly a year prior to the present day, however. Apparently, unrest was forming in the capital of Faylinn. The king of Faylinn had been killed in a tragic hunting incident, and the Prince and Princess of the kingdom had been declared outlaws by the Queen. Though Katherine and her family hoped that this would stay more or less kept to the capital, it wasn't long before the chaos surrounding the events spread to Lothering. Lord Cousland declared that the Queen was a traitor to the throne, and had brought his entire garrison back to Lothering to ready for battle.
When the Cousland soldiers began their march towards the capital, Katherine's brother and father were not amongst them, much to her joy. They had been selected, alongside a decent amount of others, to remain at the castle to act as a defense garrison. However, this joy was not to last. The night the Lord Cousland's allies were supposed to arrive to link up with the lord and continue to the capital, Katherine was working in the castle with her mother and sister. Katherine bore witness to the betrayal of the lord's allies, the Amells, who's soldiers cut down the guards at the castle gate and began to systematically go throughout the castle, killing as they went. Needless to say, Katherine was terrified.
She was lucky, however. When the attacking soldiers found Katherine, her mother, and her sister, hiding together in a side room, they did not immediately cut them down where they stood. Instead, the soldiers decided to 'have a little fun' with them, before they killed them. Choosing her sister first, the soldiers forced her at sword point to undress. Katherine, in a desperate attempt to save her sister from the soldiers' desires, attempted to attack one, but was backhanded away by one of the soldiers, leaving a large gouge across her cheek. This act, however, turned the soldiers attention from her sister to Katherine, and decided to begin with her first. This delay was the death of them.
A group of the surviving Cousland soldiers, led by Katherine's father and brother, found them before any harm could come to them. Diving into battle, the soldiers fought mercilessly against the invaders, slaughtering most of the group who had attack Katherine and her mother and sister. Unfortunately, the sound of battle drew more members of the Amell soldiers towards the fight. Shouting out for his children and his wife to escape, Katherine's father, brother, and the other guards fought on to give them a chance to flee. Together, the three of them fled to the castle kitchen, from where they would be able to escape through the servant's entrance. Unfortunately, as they ran, the sounds of battle died behind them.
Katherine's father and brother had been overwhelmed.
Upon reaching the castle kitchen, Katherine's mother urged her daughters into the servants passageway. Unfortunately, as they made to enter, the Amell soldiers caught up to them. One let loose an arrow, which flew across the hallway and hit Katherine's sister in the back of the neck, killing her instantly. Screaming for Katherine to leave, her mother picked up a butcher's knife from a counter and charged the guards in a desperate attempt to hold them off long enough for at least one of her daughters to escape. Katherine, utterly terrified and frightened, did as she was told, and fled through the servant's exit and into the night.
Since then, Katherine has been drifting from across Faylinn, unsure of what to do with her life. Blaming herself for surviving where the rest of her family did not, she would have taken her own life months ago... if she wasn't dedicated to making sure her family's sacrifices weren't in vain.
