THE APPEARANCE
Soryn is a tallish man, standing at around 6' 1." His hair, a dark, almost black brown, is kept at about medium length. His facial hair is usually kept short and rough, though occasionally he will opt to shave all of it off. This, however, is rare, as he's grown to like the look a light beard or stubble gives him. His eyes are a light, blueish gray color. When it comes to clothing, as much as Soryn wishes to wear more noble clothing, he is prevented from this due to his current situation. As a result, his clothing tends towards practicability, simply because it doesn't interfere with anything. One of his more commonly worn outfits is a Faylinnian military uniform, stolen from one of the soldiers he slew during his escape from his execution.
Perhaps the most interesting part of his appearance isn't what a part of him, but what he carries. Soryn, being a skilled wielder of crossbows, has several different styles, many of which were unique creations of his own design. Though the crossbow perpetually slung over his back is normal in appearance, it is the two repeater hand crossbows that he wears on his hips that stand out. These two hand crossbows feature collapsible prods, allowing him to keep them in a sort of ranged weapon sheath (READ: Medieval holsters).
THE PERSONALITY
Soryn is quite the depressed individual. Having had his entire family, all of his friends, and essentially all of his worldly belongings ripped away from him, he can seem bitter and resentful towards many, particularly those of high social standing. Though truly betrayed by the Amell family, Soryn sees the entire noble class of Faylinn as being traitors as well. Not only do they refuse to act in defense of the injustice within the kingdom, but they also refuse to recognize him as one of their own. Though he has only been a criminal for but a year, already Soryn can identify better with the lower classes than anyone else, and as such tends to treat them with much more respect and restraint, though even they are not immune to the frequent outbursts of anger and violence he goes through.
In the year since the betrayal, Soryn has gradually gone from being honorable and just, to more of an underhanded and vicious person. This transition happened in part do to his pent up rage, but mostly simply because the way of honor was getting him into the worst situations possible. Where he once would simply request assistance from others, and deal if denied, Soryn has turned to thievery and, if necessary, murder to accomplish his goals. In his mind, the crimes he commits are nothing compared to the ones carried out against him, and he will be redeemed in the end when he finally achieves his goal.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Faeyrn
BIRTH KINGDOM: Faylinn
Born the third child of the family Cousland, Soryn was always destined for a life of wealth. A major noble family within the kingdom of Faylinn, the Couslands were famous for their undying loyalty to the Scarborough family. For years, the lords of the Couslands had stood at the side of the kings of Faylinn, ever ready to defend the throne against those envious or stupid enough to covet it for themselves. As a result of their loyalty, the Couslands were often showered with favor, amassing land and titles to rival that of any other of the King's supporters. So it had been from the family's beginnings, so it was when Soryn was growing up.
His childhood was normal for a child of the nobility, spent in equal parts study and activity. As the third child of Lord Cousland, Soryn was given much more leeway with what he wished to do with his life, as his older brother Bryce was in line for the family titles, and his sister Elissa was to be married off to a lord of another prestigious noble family. As a result, when he became old enough to discuss his future with his father, Soryn settled for something much less glamorous then what many noble sons would have desired: a position within the Castle Cousland garrison. This request was granted by his father, who was proud to see his son wish to continue the family's legacy as defenders of the crown. Soryn began further martial training, in order to have the necessary skills for his position. It was during his training that he first began to favor the art of ranged warfare, versus the sword.
When he was in his twenty four, now firmly cemented as the leader of the Cousland garrison, Soryn's father was commanded by the king to deal with a series of skirmishes with bandits on the border between Faylinn and the Eldenar Forest. Accepting this task, Lord Cousland ordered his son to take a portion of the garrison, and link of with the guard forces who had been fighting the bandits, and to end the attacks. Soryn, by now a veteran of several engagements with outlaw war bands and border skirmishes with rival kingdoms, took to this task with relish. Taking with him a third of the garrison, Soryn ventured to the border lands, and began his campaign against the bandits. Within a month, the bandit attacks had begun to dwindle in number. By the second month, the attacks had ceased entirely. Fully successful in his mission, Soryn returned home with the garrison, only to be caught in something he had never anticipated.
While he had been away, King Christopher had been killed in a tragic hunting accident. Worse, however, was that the son and daughter of the king, the true heirs to the family power, had been sentenced to death, and their step-mother placed on the throne instead. The Cousland family was utterly furious. The story that the children of the king had plotted his death was entirely preposterous! Lord Cousland had gone to the palace, demanding for the new Queen to reverse her declaration of guilt, but he was stopped before he could even enter the throne room. It was then that he realized that things were soon to take a turn for the worst. When Soryn returned, Lord Cousland had Soryn return the garrison to their duty, recall the outlaying men under their command to the keep, and informed him of his plans. The Cousland family name would not be said to have failed the Scarborough family in their darkest hour. Lord Cousland would try once more to tell the Queen to reverse the verdict. Were she to refuse, the soldiers loyal to the Cousland family would declare war on the capital.
Sure enough, the letter Lord Cousland sent to the Queen was returned, unopened. Furious, the lord informed Soryn and Bryce to ready the men, before sending word of his plight to the Cousland family's close ally: The Amell Family.
The Amell's, though distrusted by much of the nobility, was seen by Lord Cousland as a great family of allies. Despite the rumors of the family's corruption, Lord Cousland would have none of it, and requested to meet with the family head, Daylan Amell, in order to form an alliance, the better to defend the fallen king's family. The Amell's responded in agreement, and a meeting was planned. The two lords came to an agreement almost at once. The Amell's would stand by the side of the Cousland's to take back the throne in the name of the Scarborough family. Such was the only logical plan.
The plan was simple. The combined might of the Cousland's and Amell's forces were to gather the forces of the lesser lords under their command, march to the capital, and lay demand the surrender of Valerie. Should she refuse, they would lay siege to the city, for as long as it took to succeed. The only snag in the plan came in the form of a logistics mishap within the ranks of the Amell forces. As a result, they were delayed. Understanding of such an easy mistake, the Lord Cousland sent his men ahead of him, under the command of Bryce, while Soryn and himself waited with a small detachment for Amell's men, to link up together. It was a simple, easy thing, that should have gone of without an issue.
Unfortunately, Lord Cousland did not expect the intrigue of the court to find him in his own castle. On the night of Amell's scheduled arrival, treachery struck. The men of Amell's forces attacked the Cousland keep, let in by the unsuspecting garrison. Within the castle, the traitors slaughtered the inhabitants, taking no prisoners. Servants, knights, and soldiers alike all fell beneath the blades of the far more numerous enemies. By the time Lord Cousland and Soryn could rally their men to the defense, the situation had gone from bad to worse. It was but two lords, a handful of knights and guardsmen, and Soryn's mother and sister against the might of an army. Realizing the situation was hopeless, Lord Cousland demanded his son take his mother and sister, and flee the castle, in order to warn Bryce of the their former ally's treachery. Though Soryn protested greatly, his father would have none of it. He needed to leave.
Despite the Lord's demands, however, Soryn's mother opted to stay behind. She would not leave behind her husband, no matter what. As he had no true authority over her, Lord Cousland reluctantly allowed her to stay, but forced Soryn and his sister to leave. Though heartbroken, Soryn and his sister fled into the night.
Having abandoned their keep to Amell's men, Soryn and his sister began their trek to the place where Bryce was to be waiting with his forces, three days away. By the time they arrived, they realized they were too late. Where Bryce and the army should have been, a battlefield was left. The Cousland forces had been slaughtered, for the Queen's soldiers had been tipped off by Amell. Though for a moment, Soryn and his sister hoped that their brother escaped, they had no such luck. Bryce's body was found at the center of what appeared to have been the thickest fighting, a crossbow bolt sticking out of the back of his armor, the family sword laying at his side. Taking up the sword, Soryn and his sister left the battlefield with tears in their eyes. Their family was dead, and their garrison slaughtered. They were alone.
But their troubles did not end there.
Fleeing to the border of Faylinn and Valterra, hoping to seek asylum within the neighboring kingdom, Soryn and his sister were forced to stop in a border village to gather supplies. It was there that disaster struck once more. Having realized Soryn and his sister escaped his purge, Amell had spread word they were traitors to the crown, and were to be captured. Guardsmen in the town recognized them, and attacked. Though they tried to flee, and indeed, looked like they would be able to, luck was not in their favor. An arrow, shot by one of the guardsmen, flew through the air, and hit Soryn's sister between her shoulders. Unwilling to abandon the sister he had sworn to protect, Soryn stayed, and attempted to fight off the guard the best he could. Alas, though his skill at arms was fine, he was no match for the superior numbers of the guard. Knocked unconscious by the blow of a mace, Soryn and his sister were arrested and sent to the village prison to await sentencing. However, despite the attempts of the village doctor, the arrow wound Soryn's sister resulted in her death.
When news of his sister's death reached him, Soryn was understandably furious. After having gone through the trouble of protecting his sister from enemies the entire trip to the border, it had all ended in failure. Filled with rage, Soryn began to form a plan to gain his freedom, so as to exact his revenge on those who had killed the last of his family.
After a week of waiting for the guards to pass his sentence, Soryn was finally dragged out of his cell. The word had come in: Soryn was to be hanged at the earliest convenience. His guards, delighted to finally rid themselves of their prisoner, dragged him down the guard hall's hallway, in order to bring Soryn outside, but in doing so, they were sloppy. Soryn was able to grab a dagger from the boot sheath of one of the guards without being noticed. Though his hands were bound in irons, Soryn had the element of surprise, and additional advantage of being utterly furious and driven to kill those who had captured him. Stabbing one of the guards in the side with the blade, Soryn proceeded to drop the second guard with a high kick to the throat. With the guards incapacitated, Soryn was able to take the key to his shackles from the belt of one of them, unlock his restraints, and finish the two guards off.
Retrieving his equipment from the guard house evidence chest, Soryn proceeded to leave... not before, however, slitting the throats of three off-duty guards while they slept, and stealing the armor and uniform of one of them.
Finally free, but without his sister to bring to Valterra, Soryn turned back, and headed back into Faylinn. With murder on his mind, and rage in his heart, Soryn has made it his mission to return the now-tarnished Cousland name to greatness, kill the Amell's for their treachery, and, god's willing, find the bitch who started this all, and end her life himself.
