THE APPEARANCE
Though he stands at a rather imposing height of six feet and two inches, Aelazair does not appear as physically powerful as his father or his brothers. Indeed, the other males within his family could easily defeat him in a competition of sheer strength. Aelazair is perfectly content with this, as he personally favors agility and elegance than brute strength. Though his facial features have more in common with his father than his mother, Aelazair has his mother's eyes, a dark brown, almost black color. His hair is a dark brown, which he usually wears short, the better to keep under a helmet.
His choice of dress is much less elaborate than the usual Ethir style, as he prefers to clothe himself in the uniform of the corsairs, albeit obviously more expensive. When it comes time to engage the enemies of the Ethir, Aelazair adorns himself in armor which strikes a middle ground between that worn by the corsairs under his command, and the Ethir who fight on land. His armor is an elaborately designed set of interconnecting plates, which allow him a free range of movement without sacrificing too-much protection. Upon his head he wears a helm which is purposely made to strike fear in the heart of his enemies. Styled to resemble a creature of the deep, the appropriately named 'Kraken Helm of Ba'al' is as much a symbol of Aelazair as it is a piece of armor. In addition, whether in armor or in uniform, Aelazair wears a cloak made from the scales of a mighty sea serpent, slain by Aelazair's own hand. This Seadragon cloak, as he calls it, offers him increased protection against the weapons of his enemies... especially the arrows that the forest elves hold so dear.
THE PERSONALITY
Aelazair is, without a doubt, a particularly good example of the common attitude of the Ethir. Cruelty, malice, hatred... Aelazair possesses each of these traits in great quantities, perhaps more so than most. Indeed, that he earned the nickname of 'The Fellheart' alone within a faction as vicious as the Ethir is remarkable. Aelazair is particularly proud of having aquired such a name, especially that it is known even amongst humanity. Perhaps though, one of the more interesting things about Aelazair's personality is that it seems to have two completely different sides, which manifest under certain circumstances.
While in the lands of the Ethir, Aelazair is marked by his distinct lack of obvious aggression that many of the Ethir are known for. Calm, collected, Aelazair presents himself as someone who is much, much more approachable than his fellows. He stays quiet in conversations, and in discussions with his parents or his brothers, he differs to their judgement unless it directly relates to his own field. He does not appear confrontational at all, and never loses his temper, in contrast to those such as his older brother. Despite this lack of overt vileness, it has been said that this only increases the amount of malice which radiates from him.
The moment Aelazair's boots hit the deck of a ship, however, this calm and cool side simply vanishes. Here, on board a naval vessel, he is in his true element. Where on land he would fade to the background, at sea, he is perpetually in the foreground, roaring in rage. On land, his ferocious savagery was simply implied. On a ship, it is showcased for all. Although he seems to be a wild creature at times, he is far from it. Everything he does is according to a calculated plan specifically meant to instill the greatest amount of fear from his enemies, and the greatest amount of respect from his crew. He operates under a strict code of honor, though one that is clearly twisted and warped. He refuses to kill the unarmed unless they attack him first or it is necessary to provoke a desired response, instead capturing them. In addition, any man who surrenders to his forces will be taken prisoner, unlike many officers who will order their crew to take none. This is not an example of mercy, however. Aelazair simply finds it inefficient to kill, when he could easily take them captive instead and sell them as slaves.
One of the more surprising facts about Aelazair is his stance on loyalty. While his family is, to all intents and purposes, loyal to each other, Aelazair is... less so, then the others. In truth, he only holds true loyalty to three parties: His father, his mother, and his crew. To him, though he cares about his brothers and respects them, he sees them as obstacles in the way of his plans. Aelazair holds a particular disdain for his oldest brother. He views his older brother with jealously, as Aelazair feels that as the eldest, his brother will get everything. To him, this is grossly unacceptable. Another source of jealously towards his brother is that Aelazair believes his mother favors his brother above himself. He cannot understand why she cannot see 'true talent,' such as he possesses. All in all, though Aelazair will come to his brother's aid when asked, if there comes a time that he can get rid of him... he might very well take that chance.
THE HISTORY
BIRTH REALM: Faeryn
BIRTH KINGDOM: Dra’Ira, Fa’Dei Desert
For those who observed Aelazair as he grew up, it was pretty obvious that he would one day find himself sailing at the head of the Ethir fleet. Born the third son of the Arallani of the Ethir and her lover, the Steward, Aelazair had always been fascinated with the sea. From a young age, he would constantly find himself watching as the raiding parties of the corsairs came and left, their legions of slaves trailing behind them. For Aelazair, the corsairs were his heroes, elves who sailed across the rough and dangerous sea, slaying their hated foes, and capturing the filthy humans to bring back to their dark city.
Even more so than the corsairs, however, Aelazair's hero growing up was his father. The Steward of the Ethir was, in his eyes, legendary. As the leader of the corsairs, it was his father who they all owed their chances at fortune to, his father who made all of it possible. Over time, Aelazair began to see his father as even more important to the Ethir than his mother, though he kept this opinion quiet. As a result, he strove to impress his father in all he did, hoping to become his favorite. The moment Aelazair became old enough to join the corsairs, he did so.
As the son of the leader of the Ethir, and the leader of the Corsairs, it would have been a simple matter to be given instant command of a ship. Aelazair, however, refused any offers of assistance. He knew how the Ethir worked. Were he to be given command of a ship without proving himself first, dissent would spread within his crew. They would not respect him. So instead, he opted to go through the ranks like a normal Ethir would do, albeit with better made equipment then his crewmates.
Placed on board the ship The Unholy Retribution, Aelazair quickly proved he was well suited to the life of a corsair. On his first voyage to human lands, Aelazair managed to single-handedly acquire more slaves by himself than any other member of the raiding party, earning him the respect of several members of his crew. Following this, his name grew even more respected, and he began to move his way through the ranks of officers, eventually earning himself a place as the Captain's first mate.
During one of his ship's many forays out into human waters, Aelazair found himself in a situation that no one on the crew had expected. While sailing quite a ways off the coast, The Unholy Retribution found itself under attack from a massive sea serpent, the likes of which had never been seen before. Caught entirely by surprise, the crew tried desperately to hold off the beast, but they were outmatched. The serpent managed to wrap its body around the vessel, which kept the crew from being able to utilize the ship's weapons. To make matters worse, when the Captain attempted to engage the beast by hand, he was killed, bit cleanly in half before he could so much as scratch the creature.
Aelazair, now the senior officer by default, rallied the men in their defense. Taking up the fallen captain's sword, Aelazair led the crew against the head of the serpent. Many of the crew was slain in their attempt to fight off the beast, including several of the other officers, but eventually, Aelazair saw an opening in the serpent's defenses. The agile corsair ducked underneath the serpent's head as it struck, and lashed out with his blade. His weapon found its mark, slashing through the serpent's neck directly between the scales of its back and its head. With the serpent dead, Aelazair had the beast's body drug onto the ship, beheaded, and ordered the ship to make its way back to port.
When Aelazair returned to his home, he brought with the head of the serpent. Now clad in a majestic cloak of scales, Aelazair threw the serpent's head at the foot of his mother's throne, and demanded to be elevated in rank, as high as he could go.
Since then, Aelazair has led his crew against humanity, elves, and anyone else who dared to stand before him.
